The Measurement and Evaluation Section develops analytical methodologies for chemical substances including free radicals in samples from various environmental media, undertakes field studies, and then evaluates the state of the regional environment. Utilization of chitinous biomass is another subject taught at the institute.

The Physical and Organic Chemistry Section compiles basic data on physical properties, reactivities, and structure-activity relationships for molecules, showing environmentally hazardous properties such as carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. They are utilized in elucidating the sources of the pollutants and their transformation pathways, and developing analytical techniques.

The Environmental Management Section aims at establishing environmental management systems, through developing ecotechnologies for solid waste and wastewater treatment and recycling, techniques of remediation and monitoring for the polluted environment, and methodologies to assess the environmental impact of human activities.

The Ecological Effects Section investigates the effects of various chemical substances, microorganisms, and UV/ionizing radiation in the environment onto human health and ecosystems, as well as their mechanisms. Mechanisms of microbial degradation of environmental substances is also a research subject. The relevant chemical, biological and genetical techniques are applied to the determination of environmental substances.

The Health Effects Section concerns pathophysiologycal changes in the function of the various organs and cells brought about by various environmental factors such as stresses, endocrine disruptors, and vehicle exhaust, and studies the mechanisms of maintenance and regulation of physiological functions of organisms responding to the environmental changes.
